Most of my Bass Exercises are recorded with other instruments and right from the start you learn how to play with drums.
Aside from basic technique you will learn how to create your own bass lines and how to recognise these when you are working out songs.
I have a large library of complete songs you can learn and I am happy for you to bring along anything you have found yourself.
My own exercises are in music and tablature and are recorded on CD with both the example and backing track to play along with. My Bass Style Studies show you how to play an appropriate bass line for a particular style of music.
You will learn how to read and interpret chord charts, one of the most common ways musicians write out songs for each other.
I recommend all my Bass students learn a least some sight reading as this is the one instrument that tends to get specific lines written for it. The same applies to theory as the bass usually only has one note to play at a time and they have to be the right ones!
Many students ask me when is the right time to start to play with a group. With Bass Guitar I would suggest as soon as you can! There is no reason, once you have learnt the basic technique not to start playing with other musicians straight away.
Bass is an instrument that really needs to be played with other musicians and besides, there are always bands looking for bass players...

Bass Guitar Lessons

Many years ago I was on a train back from London with a friend who played drums. Behind us were some other musicians talking. I heard one say “I can play bass, it’s just like a guitar but the strings are tuned lower.

This stuck in my mind - while technically correct a bassist has to have a very different attitude to a guitarist. Many guitarists who take up bass start by playing too many notes!
