You will learn to strum chords with various rhythms and can they use this knowledge to play songs.

Why Learn the Ukulele?
I have played the Ukulele for many years now. It is an incredibly versatile instrument that is currently very much in fashion again at the moment.
It is an ideal instrument to start on, especially for younger students as there are only four strings and is much smaller and easier to hold. The strings are tuned similar the guitar (though the bottom string is an higher than the 2nd and 3rd) which means fretting technique can be translated to the guitar later on.
If you have never played an instrument before the Ukulele is an great introduction to music and rhythm. You do not need any experience of another instrument and a beginners instrument is very cheap if you are not sure you want to commit.
I recommend Carousel Music in Haywards Heath, who offer a wide selection of instruments and have very knowledgeable staff. There are also a number of other shops in this area who also sell Ukuleles.
If you are unsure about what to look for ask a member of staff to play the instrument for you - after all when you learn to play, that is what the sound everyone else will hear!

A new Ukulele can cost as little as £15!

Ukulele Lessons

Ukuleles come in various sizes and there are now a number of modern variations on these.

The smallest is the Soprano, ideal the children as the scale length (the length of the string, including the fretboard) is shorter at around 13”. Next up is the Concert, which is tuned the same but with a 15” scale length.

The Tenor ukulele has a 17” scale length and is usually tuned the same as the Soprano and Concert but can be tuned lower.

Lastly, the Baritone has a 19” scale length and is tuned lower, similar to the range of a guitar.
